What it costs and how we work

Honest numbers, and a plain account of how the studio works and why we stay on after a site goes live.

The part most studios are vague about.

What a website costs is a genuinely hard question to get a straight answer to, because the honest answer is that quotes for the same job differ by a factor of ten and both ends sound confident. A template put together over a weekend and a properly built site are both described as a website. So this topic starts with real numbers and what each band actually gets you.

The more useful point sits behind the price. Most of the money wasted on websites is not wasted on the build, it is wasted on the silence afterwards. A site is handed over with a login, the final invoice goes out, and everyone goes quiet. A year later the prices are wrong, something has broken, nothing new has been published, search engines have stopped paying attention, and the business is paying somebody to start again from scratch. The build was never the problem.

That is why we work monthly rather than selling a project and disappearing. The website, the hosting, the content, the search, the social, handled continuously, with a plain report so you can see what is actually happening. Some of the sites we look after we built years ago and still run today.

It is not automatically the right answer for everybody. If referrals already bring you all the work you can handle and the website is a business card, a good once-off build is the sensible purchase and we will tell you so. If you need more work coming in, no once-off build fixes that, because the problem was never the website.

The posts here cover the price bands, what we actually do for the fee, the kinds of businesses we work with, and one build described start to finish so you can see what the ongoing half really involves.
