Your Google listing is probably costing you customers

Before anyone reaches your website, most people meet you on Google first. The little business box is the most-seen thing you own online, and most are a mess.

You know the little business box on the right of the search results, or the one sitting at the top of the screen on a phone. Your name, your hours, your photos, your reviews, a map pin. That is your Google Business Profile.

The short version

Your Google Business Profile is usually the first thing a customer judges you on, and often the only thing they ever look at.

Most profiles quietly lose customers through the same few gaps: an unclaimed listing, wrong hours, no photos, unanswered reviews and missing basics.

Fixing it is free, and it is mostly a matter of doing it once, properly.

Most of your competitors have not bothered, and that is your opening.

It is also free. And almost nobody looks after it.

Five gaps that send customers elsewhere

An unclaimed listing. Google often makes a basic profile for a business whether or not the owner has claimed it. If you have never claimed yours, it may be sitting there with wrong information and no way for you to fix it.

Wrong hours. The quiet job-killer. Someone checks, sees you are open, drives over, and you are shut. They do not try again. They just go to the next result and remember you as the place that wasted their trip.

No photos. A profile with no pictures looks less real than the competitor with twenty. People trust what they can see. An empty profile makes them wonder if you are still in business.

Reviews sitting unanswered. Reviews are the most persuasive thing on the whole profile, and a business that never replies to them, good or bad, looks like one that is not paying attention.

People trust what they can see.

Missing the basics. No description, no services listed, the wrong category. Each gap is a reason for Google to show someone else instead of you.

Why this is the cheapest win in marketing

Here is what makes the Google Business Profile worth caring about more than almost anything else. It is free, it is the first thing most local customers see, and fixing it is mostly a matter of doing it once, properly.

Claim it. Fill in everything. Add real photos. Get your happy customers to leave a review, and reply to the ones you have. Keep your hours honest, especially over holidays.

Do that and you will show up more, look more real, and win the customers who were comparing you to the business next door on nothing but two little Google boxes. Most of your competitors have not bothered. That is your opening.
